How to Create Assessments on iPad

Quick Start Guide to creating Assessments with Classed Up

Classed Up is an easy-to-use platform for creating assessments on the iPad. Whether you are a teacher, a tutor, or a parent, Classed Up makes it easy to create engaging iPad tests and quizzes for your students.

This tutorial in intended to show teachers how to get started. We will go over how to create a free account on Classed Up, how to create a package and an assessment, and how to assign the assessment to your students.

For this tutorial we’re going to create a quiz about Machu Picchu. So let’s dust off your Machu Picchu knowledge and get started creating your first assessment!

Sign Up screen for creating an account

Once you verify your email address and log into Classed Up you will see an empty workspace. This is where you will manage your packages, assessments, questions, and your students.

The first thing to do is add your students. Students must be added before they can be assigned to a package. Tap the STUDENTS tab at the top of the screen. This screen will show all of your students. Since you just created a new account you won’t have any students yet- so let’s go ahead and add one!

Click Invite Student, and then select Add Manually, and then you will see a form where you can enter your student details. For this tutorial we will just be adding one student.

When you press the Send Invitation button, each student will receive an invitation email with a temporary password. When they log into the system they will be prompted to change their password. Once a student has been successfully entered, they will show up in the STUDENTS page.

A Question Group is a set of questions- it can contain a single question or a large number of questions. When you create an assessment, you will select the question groups you want to include in that assessment. This organization allows you to easily reuse different question groups between different assessments.

To create a Question Group, tap the QUESTION GROUPS tab at the top of the screen, and then press the Create New Question Group button. Let’s call the Question Group “Machu Picchu Questions”. You will now see an empty screen where you will be able to drag & drop questions into your question set.

Empty Question Group screen

Drag a Multiple Choice question from the left side into the list on the right. This list on the right will become the set of questions in this Question Group. Tap on the question you just added and you will be able to edit the question, and then press Save to save the question.

Repeat these steps to add all the questions to your Question Group.

Question Group screen

Now that you have created your questions, it’s time to create a Package. Packages are the containers that contain the assessments that you give to your students. A Package can contain one assessment, or it can contain multiple assessments.

Tap the PACKAGES tab at the top of the screen, and then tap the Create Package button to create a new Package. From this screen you can enter the details for this Package.

Package Properties screen

Once the details for the Package have been entered, the next step will be to add contents to the Package. Tap on the Build tab and you will see an empty screen where you will be able to drag & drop pages into the Package.

Drag a Test Page from the left side into the list on the right. This list on the right will become the list of Pages in this Package. Tap on the Test Page you just added, and you will be able to edit the details of the Test. In our tutorial, we will have only one Page in our package; this will be our assessment.

Test Page Properties screen

Under the Properties tab, you will be able to configure the look of the Test Page within the Package (the properties on the left column), as well as set the parameters for the assessment (the properties on the right column).

Under the Question Groups tab, you will be able to specify which questions are to be used in this Test. Just drag the Question Group from the left to the list on the right. This list on the right will be the list of all the Question Groups that this assessment will use. For our tutorial, we have included the one Question Group that we just created above.

Finally, we specify which students will have access to this Package. This is done by tapping on the Students tab. This is where you can assign students to the Package.

When a new Package is created it will initially be in Draft state. This means that it won’t be visible to your students. Once you have completed all your edits and you want to deliver the Package to your students, it must be published. Publishing is accomplished by pressing the Publish Package button in the Package Editor screen.

Any changes made to the package while in Published state will become immediately available to your students. It is recommended to un-publish a Package before making any changes to it, and then Publish it again when all the changes have been made. Un-publishing is accomplished by pressing the Unpublish Package button in the Package Editor screen.

Phew that was a lot of work! We have covered a lot of ground, from creating an account, to creating test questions, to creating an assessment. We created a new Package and published it so that your students are able to access it within the Classed Up iPad App.

But before we wrap up this tutorial, let’s take a quick look at what the Package looks like from your students point-of-view. This will help better understand where all the information you entered above gets used in the iPad App.

To begin with, once your Package is published, it will show up in the My Teachers screen in the Classed Up iPad App. This is where all the Packages from all the teachers will appear, organized by teacher.

My Teachers screen in iPad App

When a student downloads the package and opens it, they will see the Package Details screen which will include the same package information that we specified earlier when we created the package in the Create a Package section above.

Package Details screen

As you recall, our package contains only one page — the Machu Picchu assessment. So when a student opens the Package, this will be the only Page they see. This Page will contain the page details that we entered above, and a “Start Questions” button to begin the assessment.

Test Page in the Package

When a student taps the “Start Questions” button, the assessment begins, and the questions from the Question Group will be presented to the student for answering.

When all the questions have been answered, the student will see a summary of the all the questions from the assessment, and at this point the assessment will be completed.

Thank you for sticking around to the end of this tutorial. We hope that this gives a good overview of how to get started using Classed Up, and how to create an assessment.
