The dirty feeling of selling online.

Have you ever tried selling anything online? I’ve not had extensive experience, but I’ve had some. I sold a coat of my daughter’s on eBay. I got 99p for it. I still think that’s hilarious, but those are the chances you take with online auctions.

Another option is to sell in bulk to a company. Maybe you’re after money to add to savings towards a luxury item. Maybe it’s a trip you’re planning. Maybe you’re like me and have a daughter at university and don’t want to fall into tens of thousands of pounds of debt again like you did in the recession. (Must thank the people responsible for the 2008 financial crisis- good job!)

My daughter cleared her bedroom out recently and produced some books and DVDs she no longer wanted. OK, I thought I’ll use one of those companies that buy your items and transfers the money into your account.

I’ve used one before and I was disgusted with their tactics. But I thought it had to be an isolated incident and decided to try again. I had read the reviews online, so I went in with my eyes open. I knew there are high numbers of people complaining about how they’re treated by this industry. I was expecting to buck the trend. I was expecting to be pleasantly surprised.

This time I used a different company. Guess what? I’m disgusted with their tactics.

Here’s how it works. You download their app. The app scans in the barcode. (Last time I had to manually enter the ISBN numbers. I spent three hours doing so.) The app either says they aren’t interested in that item or it tells you they’ll take it for 50p or whatever they’re prepared to pay for it. You aren’t going to make your fortune and if you have high ticket items on your list, I wouldn’t trust these companies with those items for reasons I’ll explain later. Only send them things they’ll offer you a few pence for. On checking some of the DVDs and games, I took a couple out of the list because I thought one game disk was damaged and one box contained a completely different game to the one shown on the cover. I’d already done my quality assurance and knew the items I was sending could be sold as used or nearly new.
