The pain of motherhood

There are as different art forms as there are different artists and modes of their expression.

Starting from poetry and literature — the very basic and fundamental form of expression of thoughts and emotions — to painting and sculpture — something in between basic or traditional and the performing art — to theatre, dance, movie, music — the purely performing arts where the artist is inseparable from his or her art: everything is some sort of imitation of the nature and its ingredients.

Nature or creation with all its deep secrets and order and rhythm, and also with its whims and capris and disorders and chaos, evokes in us a sense of wonder. But then, that is mostly beyond us.

If one is given the chance of picking up from human scale, in terms of human capabilities and patience and perseverance and nature’s contribution to the same, I think it is the processes of procreation and the subsequent raising of the baby till his reaching adulthood and attaining a sense of self, that should be considered as the supreme manifestation of art.

The First Phase:

One life form coming out of another: mother giving birth to a baby.

All the processes, the steps — starting from conception to the final delivery — are so precisely carved out — the path so neatly paved — the care so gently given — that it is nothing less than a great work of art. And the medium used for the same, i.e. mothers — are no less than an artist: they are the greatest performers on this earth. And, in this journey of motherhood nature acts as the greatest friend of a would-be mother.

The Second Phase:

Raising the baby through the challenges of life

In most cases than not mothers are the chief influencers in a child’s life which remains so even beyond the period of his attaining adulthood. As is in the matter of gene distribution so is in the matter of a child’s mental, emotional and psychological attributes and in their growth and manifestation, a mother’s — yes, majorly, a mother’s — influence remains the supreme. And in doing this, a mother is well-nigh alone sans the support of nature — and, sometimes even of the family and society which tantamounts to the journey of a lonely artist who, despite his best efforts finds it difficult to bring out the best work of art.

Whatever the fate, a mother’s effort is simply incomparable: and, thus, to me mothers are the greatest artists on this planet and their success is the greatest work of art.
