What is Trustworthy Online?

Determining what is trustworthy online is a tricky area of expertise. Today, fake news is more believable than ever before, and it is important to know where information is coming from.

Social media is an easy outlet that nearly anyone can use to release news into the world. While this is a great tool and resource to use, it is not always the best one to go to for proper details or news stories.

Think of it this way: who do you trust more — the high school student who thinks they know what the weather is going to be like tomorrow, or the meteorologist that has graphs and official data with scientific predictions?

Personally, I have a sister who almost never gets her stories right. She has been wrong in her details time and time again, and because of this, I rarely trust her to find out what is going on. The same concept applies in the media world. If someone is wrong on a website or newspaper once, it is going to be very difficult for them to gain trust from the public again.

The simplest way to ensure information is accurate is to go directly to the original source. For example, the topic of the coronavirus has stirred up a lot of discussion over the course of the last few weeks. Because people are eager to read details and updates, they are quick to believe the first articles they come across, especially when they contain information that individuals want to hear.

Overall, being sure that details are coming from experts, officials, and departments is the best way to know knowledge is true. Without accreditation, information is useless.
