Your art block

As someone standing kinda outside of the art world with a good view on the community, I have seen this dredged art block eating up my friends and fellow professionals and keeping them in that loop of self-doubt and pressure. Personally I don’t know this condition as “art block” but every creative person might have come along this feeling in their career. And I will tell you how I think you might get out of it and how you can feel better.

Treat it as a symptom. When you have a cold or a flu and have a fever, you know that eventually it will pass. You might feel bad for a while, but you will get out of it. You probably don’t sit there and cry internally about it, but you are annoyed for now, knowing it will be over.

Random image, because why not?

With stress, sorrow and tummy aches that follow I made my piece doing exactly the same. I know I will have a miserable time but that is just my body reacting on the situation and eventually it will learn to cope with it. It takes longer, maybe months. But the less attention you give it, the less power it will have over you. Consider to trust your friends with feedback, get good advice. Trust their taste for a while, even better if there is someone who you know will never sugarcoat anything. So when they say “good stuff” you know it is, and you are being ridiculous due to your “condition”.

Another thing is: Get a pat on the back sometimes. There is no shame in getting recognition for an achievement sometimes. We all want to feel good about ourselves and we all should feel comfortable reaching out to friends and family, telling them what we have been up to, what we achieved, and hear a “good boy” or receive a well earned hug. Especially now in January, when the holidays are over, there is a lack of sunlight (except when you are in Australia or smth) and when the family and friends-time is over because you return to your desk, it can gnaw on your soul that you not only are forced to work again but also aren’t happy with it. If you can, step away from your desk for a little longer doing totally meaningless stuff or even better: something you love. Recharge your batteries. Something I still have to learn myself, but works every time I get to do it. It can be tough to enjoy some personal time with “not-working” making you feel guilty. But one of my fave quotes is “if it was easy, everybody would do it”. Breaking out of the loop might be the key for you, maybe not. But if there was a guaranteed cure for these blockades, they wouldn’t be such a motherf*****.

So. Treat this feeling like a passing symptom. Reach out to friends for confirmation. Allow yourself to be applauded. And step away from your desk so you can miss being creative again.

Much love!
