Lily of the Valleys

Many Christian songs depict Jesus as the “lily of the valley,” the “rose of Sharon,” and the “fairest of ten thousand.”

Most people interpret that the “rose of Sharon” would not refer to Christ, but to His Church.

The Lily of the Valley is mentioned in the Bible 15 times and 8 of those times are in the book of the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament.

According to the Bible, the Lily grows in valleys, fields, gardens, and even among thorns. It is a sweet, fragrant flower that relates to the sweetness of Jesus’ ministry especially when He gave Himself for our transgressions.

Lily of the valley (Convallaria), sometimes known as May lily or by the French name “muguet des bois,” has been a favorite spring plant for centuries.

There are some flowers that bloom in the dark and this is one of them. Flowers open at night and are wilted by dawn. Flowers are white and fragrant, as is typical of night blooming flowers, which are adapted to attract nocturnal pollinators such as bats and moths.

When Jesus gave his life at the cross there was darkness over the earth.

There had been darkness on the earth before. When God punished Pharaoh there had been darkness. It is a sign of God’s punishment. God shows us that we have done wrong. He sometimes uses physical signs to do this. (Joel 2:30,32, Amos 5:18, Revelation 6:12–17). And on the cross, Jesus was suffering the punishment for our sins.

In the darkest our God made the cross similar to the Lily of the valleys by showing the beauty of His love. God’s love is revealed in the darkest moments.

The lily of the valley represents sweetness and the return of happiness. It can also symbolize humility. When the lily of the valley blooms, happiness is said to return.

When Jesus comes into your darkest our you will also reveal God’s love just as the Lily of the Valleys. Where sin abounds, grace has the opportunity to manifest something great.

Probably the simplest definition I have heard for grace is based around the word God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. In other words all of heaven’s resources are available to anyone who submits to the lordship of Jesus Christ

Search the Scriptures for the promises of God and declare them in your prayer time on a regular basis! Memorize some so you can access God’s Grace in times of darkness. Be like the Lily of the Valleys and bloom in the thickest darkness.
