Professional Unity Editor Layout

In the next coming days, I’m going to be working on creating my first game. The project is simply titled, Space Shooter Pro. I’ve seen a few examples of this since starting my game development journey, and I’m excited to see it all come together.

But first, I needed to setup my Unity Editor for the first time. When I first hopped in, I’ll admit that it wasn’t very readable to me.

Thankfully, there’s an easier way to do it.

When constructing your layout, it’s imperative to keep in mind the type of projects you’ll be working on, the format that they’re going to be in, and so on and so forth. The goal here is to construct something that is clean and readable, so that way we don’t have to constantly look for what we need.

Step 1

In the top right corner of the window, there is going to be a way to change your layout from the default version to something else. I’m going to be setting the layout to Tall, like so:

It’ll transform your editor to look like this instead:

And we’re already off to a good start. Next, we’re going to drag and drop our Game View to be right underneath our Scene View. I’m going to put the Game View relatively parallel to the Project View.

It’s a good idea to keep the 2 open at all times so that way you can see the changes that you make in the Scene be reflected in the Game view.

Next, I’ll be editing the Project View. It’s a bit too messy for my liking. Use the drop down menu to change the layout to one column.

And that’s pretty much everything. You can save these changes by navigating back to the top left of the window and clicking on the Save Layout… function.
