Curse of Distance

Copyrighted to Corey Rich / Aurora Photos

Edge of a deep ravine,
She was standing tall.
Cloaked by axis of time,
Hidden stayed the gorge
Until its big reveal.
Should I have spotted
Those steep sides?
Should I have seen through
The signs that were there?
Building a family I was
On another continent
In a land I called home.

She is my rock
Unflinching and steady
Leaning on her I was,
As always for strength.
Then the day of big reveal,
She fell with no warning
Down the steep incline,
Barreling to depths of the pit.
Eight thousand miles away
I stayed with outstretched arms
Foolishly hoping
To slow her rapid drop.
Wonder what I had expected,
Perhaps a sleight of hand
That shrunk distances?

In fool’s paradise I was
Ignorant and oblivious;
At doorstep of death she was
Collected and poised.
Help arrived,
thankfully for her
From closer quarters;
Futile and impotent
I felt,
Kept apart by an ocean.
