Why The British Improv Project Is Selling Out Six Months Early

The British Improv Project is a residential improvisation weekend held in the Midlands (of England) twice a year. The brainchild of Tom Young and Geoff Monk, it’s been running for over four years.

But why is it so popular? Here’s my personal take on it.

Between Friday evening and Sunday lunchtime there are six improv workshop sessions with five topics in each slot. Tom makes sure there are workshops for all levels, from beginners to advanced, and all kinds of topics.

Last weekend StuMo’s Laban session was hugely popular. Those people who did musical shizzle with Tom Hodge and Neil Goulder came back buzzing. And there was a whole course in the Harold, which participants could dip in and out of according to experience. My personal favourite was probably David Escobedo’s Scene Machine session because it was a great chance to explore premise-based improv, which I don’t get to do in my regular improv life.

Advanced improvisers are invited to pitch workshop ideas which Tom curates to build a programme. This time I taught a session for female/non-binary participants in how to shine in an audition, and it was a joy to teach improvisers from all over the country, from all different improv backgrounds.

Seriously, so lovely. And supportive. And interesting. And playful. My personal highlight might have to be Catherine Hodges sharing her light-up hula-hoop with us.

It’s practical!

OK, here’s the boring stuff, but it matters. The hotel is lovely and in an accessible location. All food is included. And it’s only £180 or £150 if you share a room. Bargain.
