A Gwawdodyn

Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island (Image: Kallie Allen)

Smoke descends and all birds have gone,

their absence noted every dawn.

As rain slows the burn I wait their return,

humble in the quiet, I hold on.

The gwawdodyn is a Welsh form with a strict syllable count and rhyme scheme. It includes an internal rhyme in line three.

Line 1–9 syllables
Line 2–9 syllables
Line 3–10 syllables
Line 4–9 syllables

Lines 1,2 and 4 share the same end rhyme.

Line 3 has an internal rhyme located more or less in middle. For example:

Heed this rule of thumb, even though it’s dumb…

There is another variation of this form in which the internal rhyme is carried between the last two lines and the end of line 3 doesn’t actually rhyme with anything.

This was prompted by the forest fires that are ravaging the Pacific Northwest and the smoke that has hung above us for almost two weeks— a constant reminder of all who have lost their homes and lives, including the terrible toll it has also taken on the wildlife.
